LESA Lutheran Schools Celebrate 2020 National Lutheran Schools Week

Nearly 8,500 Lutheran school students in the St. Louis Metro Area celebrated National Lutheran Schools Week, Jan. 26 – Feb. 1, 2020, with service projects, special events and open houses.

The theme of this year’s National Lutheran Schools Week was “Joy:fully Lutheran”!, from First Thessalonians 5:16–24: “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” Throughout the week, students celebrated individual themes for each day:

  • JOY FULLY
  • THANK FULLY
  • PEACE FULLY
  • FAITH FULLY
  • HOPE FULLY

Nationwide, National Lutheran Schools Week provides nearly 2,000 Lutheran preschools, elementary schools and high schools with the public opportunity to proclaim and celebrate God’s work among us in schools of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

In the St. Louis area and southern Illinois, nearly 8,500 children attend 33 LESA-member Lutheran schools, making Lutheran schools the second largest private school system in the Bi-State Region. Lutheran schools serve children of all faiths, abilities and backgrounds and meaningful tuition assistance is available for students who qualify. To date, LESA has awarded more than $5.5 million to St. Louis area families, touching the lives of more than 3,300 children.

First Lutheran "All Schools" Robotics Expo a Success

About 20 Lutheran school Robotics Teams participated in the first ever Lutheran Schools Robotics Expo, Sat., Feb 1, 2020, sharing experiences and resources as we continue to inspire captivation in the vast world of STEM.

Lutheran High, St. Charles hosted the Expo, giving students and mentors from all over the St. Louis Lutheran school community the chance to demonstrate their robots, projects and programs in a low-pressure environment of exploration and inspiration. 

Thank you to the numerous LESA and Lutheran High volunteers who helped things run smoothly, especially Lutheran High’s FIRST FRC Team 4329 Roboteers. And congratulations to all of the schools that participated:

LESA Member Teacher Named LEA Outstanding New Lutheran Elementary Teacher

Allyson Hoger was selected to receive Lutheran Education Association’s 2020 Outstanding New Lutheran Elementary Teacher Award. She is in her third year of teaching at Immanuel Lutheran School in St. Charles, Mo. Among responsibilities in addition to teaching third grade, Allyson leads the Faith Family Committee, serves on the Yearbook Committee, and is assistant cheerleading coach. Ms. Hoger earned a B.A. in elementary education with a minor in theology and endorsements in special education and middle school language arts from Concordia University Chicago.

One parent, in support of Allyson’s nomination, said, “As a parent of four children, I have met many teachers over the years and Allyson is far and away one of the best we have ever had. She has the gift of teaching. I am not even comparing her to other new teachers; she is one of the best of all time. I find it so refreshing when I go to parent-teacher conferences. Miss Hoger knows the whole child. She is extremely organized and passionate. These characteristics shine through in all that she does. She makes learning fun and exciting. She is amazing at incorporating games and technology into her lessons.”

Allyson’s assistant principal commented, “Miss Hoger’s lessons are phenomenal. She presents each subject area in a variety of methods in order to educate her classroom of diverse learners. When observing Miss Hoger’s classroom I am immediately drawn to the energy and confidence Miss Hoger exudes in presenting each lesson. In turn, her students feed off her energy and excitement for the subject matter. Her pastor adds, “Allyson goes above and beyond with her involvement in the school and church outside her classroom. She never strives just to get by or for the bare minimum. Allyson always surpasses my expectations and is a team player and a natural leader. She is mature beyond her years. She relates with ease and excellence with people of all ages.”

Allyson says, “My mission as a Lutheran educator is to inspire and support students by providing them with a safe and loving learning environment in order to educate them socially, emotionally, spiritually, and cognitively so that they can learn how to be Christ followers in today’s society. Students in my classroom have the purpose of learning, cooperating as a body of Christ and deepening their faith. It is my belief that the teaching ministry involves not only teaching young minds but also encouraging children to be disciples so that they can spread the Gospel message to others.”

Green Park Lutheran Student is St. Louis’s 2020 Lutheran Student Christian Leader

Ella Arbeiter, 13, would have been honored Saturday, April 18, at LESA’s cancelled “Cooking for Kids” Dinner-Auction to support Lutheran schools

(St. Louis, MO) April 20, 2020 – Ella Arbeiter, a graduating eighth-grader at Green Park Lutheran School in south St. Louis County – and future Lutheran South freshman – has been named Lutheran Student Christian Leader of the Year by the St. Louis-based Lutheran Elementary School Association (LESA). The award, which includes a $500 scholarship underwritten by the Lutheran Church Extension Fund, recognizes Lutheran elementary schools students who demonstrate courage, compassion, leadership, academic achievement and a commitment to their community. (Click here to see a video interview with Ella.)

Ella, 13, had been scheduled to receive her award Saturday, April 18, at LESA’s annual “Cooking for Kids” Tribute Dinner-Auction at Orlando Gardens South. The dinner, which was cancelleddue to the COVID-19 crisis, has since been converted to an online auction event to support scholarships and services for students at 31 Lutheran elementary schools in the St. Louis area. Bidding begins Saturday, April 18, and runs through May 3 at www.lesastl.org.

Ella was nominated for the award by one of her teachers, Mr. Joshua Dixon. “Ella has been instrumental over the past few years in the operation of our yearly food drives and donation drives for missionaries and other church work,” said Mr. Dixon. “She’s the first to volunteer, the first to comfort, the first to try new things and the first to jump into action when action is needed. She leads by examples and encourages others to follow her example.”

Last year, Ella and her mother Emily participated in a mission trip to Hong Kong, where Ella helped students read and speak English. “It was so cool to be over there and to share our faith,” said Ella. She says her desire to help others is inspired by her mother, who raised Ella as a single mother after having her in college. “I look up to my mother as a leader because she did it by herself,” said Ella. “She moved to St. Louis where she didn’t know anyone. I see her as a huge role model in my life.”

In addition to her service work and studies, Ella is an active athlete. At Green Park, she played basketball and ran track and cross country. She also swims competitively year-round. Her favorite subjects are English and math, and she hopes to work in business or accounting someday. In the meantime, she’s looking forward to attending Lutheran South in the fall. For Ella, being a Lutheran Christian Leader is a way of life. “It means that you try to be the best role model – when someone is looking and when someone is not.”

LESA hopes to honor Ella in person at a future date, in cooperation with public health guidelines.

“Cooking for Kids” is LESA’s largest annual fundraising event to support and sustain the future of Lutheran Christian education in the St. Louis Metro Area. Bidding will open April 18 at www.LESAstl.org for hundreds of items, including jewelry, art, autographed sports memorabilia, tickets to see Hamilton at the Fox, Blues and Cardinals tickets, golf packages, and season passes to the St. Louis Zoo, among other prizes.

Lutheran “All Schools” Open House Sunday, Jan. 26

(ST. LOUIS, MO) January 15, 2020 – Nearly 8,500 students in the St. Louis Metro Area will celebrate National Lutheran Schools Week (Jan. 26 – Feb. 1, 2020) with service projects, special events and open houses. The schools are members of the St. Louis-based Lutheran Elementary School Association. 

The theme of this year’s National Lutheran Schools Week is “Joy:fully Lutheran”!, from First Thessalonians 5:16–24: “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” 

In the St. Louis area, 19 schools will begin the week with a special Lutheran “All Schools” Winter Open House event Sunday, Jan. 26, at their respective campuses. Most will welcome visitors from 1-3 p.m., but times may vary. To confirm times and find participating schools in your area, visit www.LESAstl.org, or call LESA at 314-200-7014.
